Worrying Can Ruin Relationships

You are not normal if you don’t get worried. Most of the time, people worry about little things, worry about a lot of things but basically people worry every once in a while. But there has been a recent research study that worrying can interefere in the person’s life and endanger is social health or relationships especially when it becomes so intrusive and obsessive. This research study was conducted and led by a Case Western Reserve University faculty member in psychology by the name of Amy Przeoworski. She states that the people who have this are suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

The top worries of those who have GAD are usually with family, friends and co-workers. Their social relationships with them are put in danger because they are either too nurturing or overly detached from them. This can be very destructive.

People who go on therapy for GAD were observed to have to have different ways of handling their worries as seen by Przeworski and colleagues at Penn State University. They can be intrusive, cold, nonassertive and exploitable and these are the four different styles manifested by patient’s with GAD. These are mostly extremes and are quite dangerous to social relationships.

We can take an example for GAD for those with intrusive styles. If you are a parent or a lover who calls every five minutes to check up on you, you might be worrying to much and at risk of destroying the relationship. Those who criticize to much because they worry about the person being careless or reckless can also have the same destructive effect.

GAD is mostly treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and the treatment has been successful to 60% of the people that underwent it. But Przeworski also suggested that dealing with interpersonal relationships and improving them can also improve the success rate for the treatment against GAD. Worrying is not the problem you have to get treated.
